BUSIM/VAVlab (Volumetric Analysis & Visualization Group) was founded in 2003 as a member of the Bogazici University Signal Processing Center (BUSIM) within the Electrical&Electronics Engineering Department. We received our first funding from the Bogazici University Research Funds in 2003 and got a kick start within BUSIM. Later, VAVlab established national and international collaborations including partnership in SIMILAR Network of Excellence (EU 6th Framework Programme) as part of Bogazici University MultiMedia Group and research collaboration with Stanford University, Radiological Sciences Laboratory, 3D Lab, CA, USA. The lab is mainly funded by research grants from TUBITAK (National Science Foundation of Turkey), EU funds and industrial partners.

In fall 2006, VAVlab has moved to its current location within the EE department. The research group grew with new faculty from Computer Engineering and Mathematics departments and international collaborators joining us. The research environment is built on a custom platform-independent software framework called VAVframe built on VTK. VAVframe is a C++ library which provides standardization and a unifying platform for VAVlab research products.

Our approach to research is to develop and implement technologies that can be put in practice. As part of this strategy, our mission includes building a bridge between medical institutions (esp. the national ones) and national/international research institutions.

VAVlab's research areas include:

  • 3D Image Processing and Analysis
  • Tensor Signal Processing
  • Medical Imaging
  • Computer Aided Detection and Diagnosis in Medicine (esp. Radiology)
  • Medical IT (eg. PACS systems, teleradiology)
  • Volumetric Visualization and User Interfaces
  • Digital Video Processing
